Outdoor Activities
GeoTour 67* at the Biosphère: Canada's unique technological innovation
Environment Canada's Biosphère has launched an activity that is both unique and original: the interactive GeoTour 67* walking circuit, where visitors find their way around using a GPS (Global Positioning System) navigational device. What makes this educational activity unique is the fact that it involves the use of an innovative interpretive device that merges high technology with geolocalization. Complete with multimedia content, it offers an experience of interactive discovery that is unique in Canada.
GeoTour 67* makes use of satellite positioning technology. The pre-programmed GPS includes photographs, audio clips, anecdotes and diverse information relating to 25 points of interest on Sainte-Hélène and Notre-Dame islands. Whenever the participant arrives at any of these points, the GPS device automatically begins to display or play visual or audio content that relates to the specific place. Visitors can also use the GPS device's map display to get around the islands, or to display their chosen route, while always being aware of exactly where they are in real time. They can navigate extensively at will without ever having to consult signs for directions or maps.
GeoTour 67* offers two 4-km circuits with a theme highlighting Expo 67 and the evolution of environmental awareness over the past 40 years. It's an original way to discover the nature and history of the islands, have a sightseeing visit and enjoy a memorable museum-related experience. The circuits were designed to lead visitors to the most scenic parts of the islands. New themes and additional circuits may be added in the future. The handheld GPS devices are available at the Biosphère ticket office (rental fee: $5).
Trilogy–The Surprising Nature of Water
This interpretative trail takes you to three wetlands in Parc Jean-Drapeau: the Biosphère’s environmentally friendly wastewater treatment plant, the marsh in the Floralies garden and the filter ponds at the beach.
